The American citizen sentenced to 15 years in a North Korean labor camp has appealed to

the Korean

authorities for forgiveness and asked the United States for help in securing his release in

an exclusive

interview from prison obtained Wednesday by CNN.

북한의 노동교화소에서 15년 형을 선고받은 미국 시민이 CNN이 수요일 입수한 독점 인터뷰

에서 북한 당국에 용서를 호소했고 미국에 석방을 담보하는 도움을 요청했다.

Pae Jun Ho, known as Kenneth Bae by U.S. authorities, was found guilty in an April 30 trial

of "hostile acts to bring down its government" and planning anti-North Korea religious

activities, according to the North's state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

배준호 씨는 조선중앙통신에 의하면 반북 종교 활동 기도 혐의로 ‘공화국 적대행위’의 혐의

로 4월 30일 유죄선고를 받았다고 한다.

"Although my health is not good, I am being patient and coping well," Bae said. "And I hope

that with the help of the North Korean government and the United States, I will be released

soon."

“건강이 안 좋지만 참을 수 있고 일들이 잘 되어갑니다. 그리고 미국과 북한 정부의 협조로 곧

풀려나길 희망합니다.“라고 했다.

In the interview footage, his head was shaved and his face noticeably thinner than the

previous photos of the Korean-American. Bae wore a blue prison garment streaked with

sweat and dirt that bore the number 103.

인터뷰 장면에서 머리는 단발이었고 얼굴은 확실히 이전보다 핼쑥했었다. 배 씨는 수감번호

103번이 적힌 땀과 먼지범벅의 파란 죄수복을 입고 있었다.

"I know what I did is not easily forgivable, but I hope that things will work out so that I can be

with my family again soon," Bae continued.

“제가 한 행위가 쉽게 용서되지 않을 것임을 알지만 문제가 잘 풀려 곧 가족들과 다시 같이하게 되길 희망합니다.“

The video was made by a pro-North Korean group based in Tokyo, Choson Sinbo, which

interviewed Bae in prison recently. The interview is believed to be the first since Bae's

sentencing about two months ago.

이 영상은 동경의 친북 성향 신문 조선신보가 제작했는데 조선신보는 수감된 배 씨를 최근

인터뷰했다. 이 인터뷰는 2개월 전의 수감 이후 첫 영상으로 여겨지고 있다.

Choson Sinbo was permitted to conduct the interview by North Korea. The edited footage,

which runs less than eight minutes, was made available to CNN.

북한은 조선신보의 인터뷰를 허락했다. 8분이 약간 안 되는 이 영상을 CNN이 공개했다.

The timing of the Bae interview comes after North Korea proposed high-level talks with the

United States last month. Washington does not appear to be rushing towards talks, as it has

previously stated that Pyongyang must take concrete steps to denuclearize as a pre-

condition.

배 씨의 인터뷰 시점은 북한이 지난달 미국에 고위급 회담을 제안할 때였다. 북한이 전제조

건으로 확실한 비핵화 절차를 밟아야 한다고 사전에 언급했던 것에 따라 미국은 대화에 급한

태도를 보이지 않고 있다.

However, North Korea has stated before that Bae is not a "political bargaining chip" through

KCNA. The United States has called on the North to grant Bae amnesty, citing concerns

about the lack of transparency in the North Korean legal system

하지만 북한은 배 씨가 ‘정치적 협상카드’가 아님을 조선중앙통신을 통해 이전에 발표한 바

있다. 미국은 북한의 법체계가 명료하지 못하다는 우려를 밝히며 북한에 배 씨의 사면을 요

구했다.

"There is no greater priority for us than the welfare and safety of U.S. citizens abroad and

we urge the DPRK authorities to grant Mr. Bae amnesty and immediate release," said Brent

Byers, spokesperson at the U.S. Embassy in South Korea. He added that the Swedish 

embassy in Pyongyang, which represents U.S. interests there, has met with Bae six times 

since his arrest.

주한미국대사관 대변인 브렌트 바이어스는 “국외에 있는 미국 시민의 복지와 안전보다 우리

에게 중요한 것은 없으며 북한 당국에 배 씨의 사면과 즉각적 석방을 촉구한다.”고 밝혔다.

또한 미국의 입장을 대변하는 평양의 스웨덴 대사관이 수감 이후 6번 배 씨를 만났다고 덧붙

였다.

In the interview, Bae sat in a room next to a door and a radiator. He calmly described his

current prison life as eight hours of farm labor -- which he had never done before -- with a

break in the middle of the day and lunch. He was also filmed clearing the fields, wearing

black gloves and a hat as a guard stood watch nearby.

인터뷰에서 배 씨는 난로와 문 옆에 앉아 있었다. 차분하게, - 이전에는 경험하지 못했던 -

낮과 점심시간 중간 중간 휴식을 취하며 8시간의 노동을 한다고 밝혔다. 감시자 옆에서 검은

장갑을 끼고 모자를 쓰며 밭을 치우는 모습도 찍혔다.

When asked if prison life was bearable, Bae replied, "Yes, people here are very

considerate. But my health is not in the best condition, so there are some difficulties. But,

everyone here is considerate and generous, and we have doctors here, so I'm getting

regular check-ups."

수감생활이 버틸 만하냐는 질문을 받을 때 배 씨는 “그렇습니다. 여기 계신 분들 아주 마음

씨도 좋지만 건강이 아주 좋지는 않아서 조금 힘듭니다. 하지만 여기 계신 분들 모두 마음씨

도 좋고 착하고, 의사도 있어서 주기적으로 건강검진을 받고 있습니다.”고 했다.

He spoke of health problems including diabetes, high blood pressure, fatty liver and a back

problem. Bae spoke stoically throughout the interview conducted in Korean. But his eyes

welled with tears when he spoke about his father's upcoming 70th birthday on July 4 —

American Independence Day holiday.

"I was hoping that my problem would be worked out by end of June. So my hope is that

North Korea will forgive, and the U.S. will try harder to get me out speedily. I'm asking for 

their help."

당뇨, 고혈압, 지방간, 척추 문제 같은 건강 문제에 대해서도 밝혔다. 배 씨는 인터뷰 중 전

반적으로 차분하게 이야기를 했으나 아버지의 다가오는 7월 4일 70세 생신(미국 독립기념

일)에 대해 얘기할 때 눈에 눈물이 고였다. “6월 말까지는 문제가 해결될 것을 원했습니다.

그래서 북한이 용서하고 미국이 빨리 저를 구해주길 희망했습니다.”

He paused and bowed his head, blinking back tears. As he tried to compose himself, he

spoke between deep breaths.

눈물이 흐르는 것을 참으며 인터뷰를 멈추고 고개를 숙였다. 감정을 가다듬으며 숨을 푹 쉬

고 이어갔다.

"I am an only son.. my father, I really hope to go to congratulate him on his birthday."

“저는 독자입니다..아버지 생신축하를 정말 해드리고 싶습니다.”

Bae said he has had only had two phone calls with his family -- once before the trial and

another after the trial.

배 씨는 가족들과 통화를 두 번밖에 못했다고 한다. 한 번은 재판 이전, 다른 한 번은 재판

이후였다.

North Korean media  has detailed the reasons why Bae was sentenced. Among the list of

alleged crimes was setting up bases in China for the "purpose of toppling the DPRK

government," encouraging DPRK citizens to bring down its government and conducting a

"malignant smear campaign." KCNA added that Bae had planned what it called a "Jericho

operation" to bring down North Korea through religious activities. It suggested that Bae

could have been sentenced to death, but avoided it through "candid confession of his

crimes."

북한 언론은 배 씨가 왜 형을 선고받았는지 구체적으로 밝혔다. 관련 혐의에는 인민들에게

북한 정부를 붕괴하고 비방 선전 활동을 벌이도록 촉구함으로써 북한 정권을 무너뜨리는 것

을 목적으로 하는 단체를 중국에 설립하려고 했다는 것이 포함됐다. 조선중앙통신은 배 씨가

종교 활동을 통해 북한을 무너뜨리는 일명 ‘예리코 계획’을 세우고 있었다고 보도했다. 또한

배 씨가 사형 선고까지 받을 수 있었지만 자기의 범죄행위에 진심으로 반성했기에 면할 수

있었다고 했다.

Bae said in the interview that he refused a defense attorney in his trial because he had

admitted to breaking North Korean laws in his preliminary hearings. "I admitted to the

charges, so I thought that it wasn't really necessary to have a defense lawyer during the

trial. I admitted to my crime, and apologized for it," he said.

배 씨는 인터뷰에서 예심 중 북한 법을 지키지 않으려 했다는 것을 인정했기에 재판 중 변호

사를 거부했다고 밝혔다. “잘못된 행위를 했기에 재판 중 변호사를 선임할 필요가 없다고 생

각했다. 잘못을 인정했고 사죄했다.”

KCNA said the Korean-American was arrested November 3 after arriving as a tourist in 

Rason City, a port in the northeastern corner of North Korea. It described  Bae is being 

held at a "special prison,"although there was little detail of what that entailed. The prison

where Bae was interviewed was not disclosed by Choson Sinbu.

조선중앙통신은 북한 북동부 항구인 나선시에 관광객으로 입국한 이후 11월 3일 체포됐다고

했다. 또한 관련 혐의가 부족했지만, 특별 교화소에 수감됐다고 했다. 배 씨가 어떤 교화소

에 있는지는 알려지지 않았다.

Bae is father to three children, according to his sister, Terri Chung. In a previous interview

with CNN, she said that her brother is "a good man; he's not a spy. He has never had any

evil intentions against North Korea, or any other country for that matter." She had said that

he is the owner of a tour company and was in North Korea for work.

배 씨는 세 자녀의 아버지다. CNN과 이전에 가진 인터뷰에서 배 씨의 자매는 ‘좋은 사람

이다. 스파이가 아니다. 북한 혹은 기타 국가에 대해 나쁜 의도를 품은 적이 전혀 없다.’고

했다. 또한 여행사 사장이고 북한에 일을 보러 간 것이라고 했다.

Bae graduated from the University of Oregon in 1992, according to a website created by his

friends. In the Facebook page and a website called "Free Kenneth," friends describe him 

as a man who volunteered with disadvantaged students and liked helping people.

친구가 만든 웹사이트에 따르면 배 씨는 1992년 오리건대를 졸업했다고 한다. 페북 페이지

와 ‘프리 케네스’라는 웹사이트에서 친구들은 그가 힘든 학생들과 같이 봉사활동도 하고 남

들을 돕길 즐겼던 친구라고 했다.

Former NBA star Dennis Rodman has even appealed to North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un

asking him on Twitter to "do me a solid and cut Kenneth Bae loose."

이전 NBA 스타 데니스 로드먼은 케네스 배를 석방하라고 김정은에게 트위터로 부탁했다.
